The three-body problem: what is it and why is it impossible to solve it?


Orbital mechanics loses predictability when a third massive object is added to the gravitational system. Isaac Newton's classical physics easily describes the Earth's rotation around the Sun, but the appearance of an additional planet breaks strict mathematical models.
Dynamic chaos makes long-term orbit predictions impossible. The mechanics of gravitational interaction explains the reasons for the lack of a universal analytical solution for a group of celestial bodies.
The mathematical barrier of integrals of motion
The equations of motion for a system of two masses are solved using the laws of conservation of momentum and energy. Physicists find precise trajectories: ellipses, parabolas, or hyperbolas. Adding a third body instantly increases the number of differential equations to 18.
To solve a complex system, it is required to find 18 independent integrals of motion. Science knows only ten of them, describing the conservation of basic energy, momentum and angular momentum. The shortage of constants leads to:
- the impossibility of reducing the problem to simple formulas;
- the appearance of infinite series with divergent values;
- unpredictable dependence of orbits on microscopic deviations.
Henri Poincare proved the nonintegrability theorem at the end of the nineteenth century. There is simply no analytical solution in the form of a finite combination of standard mathematical functions for three bodies.
The butterfly effect in celestial mechanics
A minor change in the initial coordinates or velocity of one of the objects radically changes the future of the entire system. This physical phenomenon is called sensitivity to initial conditions. An error in calculations of fractions of a millimeter turns into deviations of millions of kilometers after a few years.
The trajectories of objects begin to intertwine in an unpredictable way in three-dimensional space. Planets are thrown out of the system by a gravitational sling or collide with stars. Modeling such scenarios requires:
- input of astronomical data with extreme accuracy;
- the use of complex numerical integration algorithms;
- attracting the computing power of supercomputers.
Numerical methods provide only a temporary prediction of orbits. The further an astrophysicist looks into the future, the faster machine rounding errors accumulate in processors.

Astronomers have found technical solutions for particular configurations through the search for strict periodic orbits. If the objects are arranged in the form of an equilateral triangle or lined up in a straight line with certain speeds, the system gains stability for a short time. Lagrange points demonstrate an example of a stable position of a light satellite between two massive bodies.
Octal orbits represent another special case. Three stars of the same mass endlessly chase each other along a trajectory resembling the sign of mathematical infinity. The slightest gravitational disturbance from the outside instantly destroys this fragile harmony.
Modern space agencies use perturbation theory to launch interplanetary probes. Experts calculate the influence of the Sun and the Earth as the main one, and the Moon's gravity is added as a weak mathematical correction, constantly adjusting the course of the vehicles with maneuvering engines.
